ARLES 2025
DISOBEDIENT IMAGES
Commitment pervades the entire program of this 56th edition. From Australia to Brazil, through North America and the Caribbean, while the world is shaken by rising nationalism, nihilism and environmental crises, the photographic perspectives presented offer a crucial counterpoint to the prevailing discourse, celebrating the diversity of cultures, genders and origins.
Christoph Wiesner and Aurélie de Lanlay, director and deputy of the Rencontres d’Arles said: “The opening week of the 56th Rencontres d’Arles gathered nearly 23 000 photographers, artists, professionals and enthusiasts. This success is first and foremost that of Images indociles: works that resist and question the dominant discourse. It’s the success of a kind of photography that, from the voices of Australia’s First Peoples to the prolific contemporary scene in Brazil, via the work of Nan Goldin, Louis Stettner, Yves Saint Laurent and Letizia Battaglia, is asserting its role as a tool of testimony and social transformation. More than ever, this edition confirms that the Rencontres d’Arles is an essential platform for dialogue and for raising awareness, a place where artists can express themselves and make their voices heard in complete freedom. We are delighted to see the public so enthusiastically embracing images that celebrate the diversity of cultures, genders and origins.“
