2022-2023 — Colombia
About this series
Early 2022 I had the opportunity to photograph, film, and share knowledge with two nonprofit Organizations that design and implement environmental and social projects to protect and preserve the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and its surroundings. The road not only took me to the Arhuacos, Koguis, Wiwas, and Kankuamos but also to the Afro communities. I met the women representing the Bullerengue – a music and dance of Colombia’s Caribbean coast – in Maria la Baja, Bolivar and Isla Fuerte. This art form is performed by the descendants of the slaves who inhabited that region.
Listening to their stories and portraying their faces reminded me of the struggle of those who continue to protect their lands, homes, and communities. In the face of the armed conflict in Colombia, it is important to recognize the value of this complex and diverse territory. For our future leaders and our ancestors, let us remember to amplify their voices, wherever they are.
