Scenes From The South

Mathew Scott

2020-2022 — Georgia, Tennessee, North and South Carolina, USA

About this series

Scenes From The South is a project that came about through a series of assignments in and around Georgia, Tennessee and both North and South Carolina. Due to the recently implemented Covid guidelines, I found myself with more down-time between shoot days. I decided to use this time by exploring my surroundings as this part of the county was new to me. For my approach, I would pick a location on the map with the intention of stopping and taking a closer look at anything that caught my attention along the way, setting points like this throughout the day, trusting my instincts and following the light. In doing so, I discovered a lush landscape steeped in Southern culture and charm. From lively conversations with locals in Atlanta to the seemingly never ending coastline along the Carolinas, I was constantly challenging my preconceived notions about this region by what I was actively learning and discovering. There is something about the light, the atmosphere and the people in the South that I find fascinating and I look forward to future trips, digging a little deeper learning more about this unique part of the US.

He currently splits his time between Los Angeles and San Francisco working on a variety of commissioned and personal projects.
